CTL - Funchal debuts in FITEQ's latest tournament
The jaw-dropping island, Madeira, hosts the next stop of the Challenger Teqball League from July 25 to 27, with 48 athletes representing 9 countries in the three doubles categories: women's, men's and mixed. Before the event, thanks to the local organisers and the Portuguese Teqball Federation, the Ukrainian Teqball team reunites in Madeira for its first training camp since the war began
In men's doubles, this year's dominating pair, the world silver medallist Marek Pokwap (POL) and the two-time world champion in men's singles, Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU), won every title but one. Their single loss came in Monaco at the previous CTL edition in the final. They are considered the undisputed favourites. Not even the experts would easily agree on the rest of the field. Oleh Usychenko/Dmytro Shevchuk (UKR) finished 5th at the World Teqball Championships 2025, but Noah Dahlmann (DEN)/Goncalo Reis (POR) are also a twosome to follow. Maximilian Hunfeld arrives in Funchal as a fresh German champion after defending his title in the domestic championships. His partner will be Mathis Rehburg (GER), a relatively new athlete in international competitions. Joao Pinheiro/Luis Santos are the highest-seeded Portuguese doubles and have a great chance to reach the semifinals.
European champion and world bronze medallist Kinga Barabasi (ROU) teams up once again with the world and European bronze medallist, Amelie Julian (FRA), to get their first title in women's doubles in 2025 together. World bronze medallist from Ho Chi Minh City, Mira Dahlmann (DEN) and Zsofia Dezsenyi (HUN) might be the main challengers. The highest-ranked Ukrainian athletes, Iryna Dubytska and her compatriot Anastasiia Terekh, are ready to cause surprises. 2023 'Queen of Teqball', Anna Izsak (HUN) shifted her focus on the women's doubles, and it seems to be paying out as she has improved her FITEQ World Ranking position by 42 since the beginning of 2025. Her partner is going to be Jessica Dourado (POR), who has never reached the quarter finals outside of Portugal.
The world bronze medallist duo, Gyorgydeak/Barabasi, only did not triumph in China at the Teqball World Series Jinan this season, where they finished third. In mixed doubles, this makes Gyorgydeak, whose unbelievable streak just of men's singles just ended after 87 consecutive Ws at the latest Adriatic Teqball League stop in Bar, Montenegro. It was his clubmate and partner in men's doubles, Pokwap, who stopped his run. In mixed doubles, it can be the case once again as the Polish team up with Julian and are considered as the favourites. Interesting fact that the two pairs are siblings too. The Dahlmanns, Mira and Noah from Denmark and the Simos from Romania, Bence & Boglarka.
The Challenger Teqball League - Funchal runs from July 25th to 27th, with a prize pool of €3,000 to be distributed among the medallists across all three categories. The semifinals and finals on Sunday will be streamed on TEQ TV.
