Two major upsets led to Bako&Odnoga’s first ever tournament victory

The I. Teq Festival brought huge surprises as Banyik/Katz's streak ended.

The I. Teq Festival took place in the beautiful Hungarian city of Esztergom, just a couple of meters away from the shore of the Danube River. The heroes of the successful European Games took part in the competition, which brought an end to an incredible undefeated streak.

Women’s doubles

In the women’s double, Gabriella Kota and Krisztina Acs put up a scintillating performance throughout the 3-day event, and they won the gold without losing a set. What makes it even more remarkable is that they dominated in the final against Lea Vasas and Zsanett Janicsek - the duo that was crowned at the European Championship only a month ago. To make the Hungarian medal collection full, Petra Pechy and Nora Vicsek claimed the bronze in a rain-delayed match.

Acs, Kota (HUN) – Vasas, Janicsek (HUN) 2:0 (9-, 4-)

"Fortunately, our serves and smashes were good, although it is difficult to prepare for a match like this. But everything went the way we wanted it to. We played good matches in the whole tournament despite the heat, it was a good tournament!"- said Krisztina Ács.

Mixed doubles

Kota had no time to rest after the women’s final since she was set to make another appearance in the mixed final alongside Balazs Katz. Their opponents, Nikola Mitro and Maja Umicevic cruised through the field with an immaculate record on their way to the final, while Kota and Katz fought some epic battles - they managed to come back against Vicsek and Matyas Odnoga in the Round of 16 and repeated this feat against Csaba Banyik and Krisztina Acs in the semifinal. And the gold medal game was not different by any means: Mitro&Umicevic took the lead with four consecutive points after 8:8 in the first set. The Hungarians once again regrouped and put the pedal to the metal to equalize in the second period and then closed the Serbians out in a quite one-sided third set to take the victory. Their compatriots, Petra Pechy and Adam Blazsovics won the bronze. Kota got the golds in Esztergom, while Pechy ended up with two bronzes.

Kota, Katz (HUN) – Umicevic, Mitro (SRB) 2:1 (-8, 7-, 5-)

"It wasn't easy in any of the finals, the women's doubles was a bit more stressful because it was a match that was the umpteenth leg of a match, so I'm very happy that we won. And with Balazs, it was our first tournament win together, and we've been trying for a long time, but something was always missing. I didn't get much rest between the two matches, but luckily I stayed in rhythm and managed to win!" said Gabriella Kota, who won two gold medals.

Men’s doubles

Mitro had to rush back to the main stage to take part in the men’s final together with his usual partner, Bogdan Marojevic. The world champions dominated until the last match, where they met the up-and-coming Adam Bako and Matyas Odnoga. It was the first international competition for the Hungarian pair, and they pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year in the semifinal, where they ended the European champions’, Csaba Banyik’s and Balazs Katz’s 11-month-long winning streak in a thrilling match that needed overtime. They carried the momentum into the final against the world ranking leaders, who were only able to keep it close in the middle of the second set. Odnoga and Bako won their first tournament ever and they claimed after the final that it made them even hungrier for more success. Their countrymen, Katz and Banyik achieved 3rd place.

Bako, Odnoga (HUN) – Mitro, Marojevic (SRB) 2:0 (7-, 10-)

"Inside it was a close game, we played a back-and-forth game, which we probably took better advantage of and were able to finish it so they couldn't come back, and we defended pretty well. This win means a lot in terms of confidence, it was our first international tournament, we got the step, we have the chemistry because we are very good friends off the court and we can bring that to the court" - Mátyás Odnoga analysed the tournament.

"The difference in form on the day could have been the deciding factor, we were in flow the whole match, we played our game with precision, Matyi hit unconscious shots and I was able to defend and give up well. Now comes Pula, we are preparing with great energy, we want to win that game too and stand on the top step of the podium!" - added Adam Bakó.
