CTL – Pokwap, Gyorgydeak and Barabasi shine in Grindsted

With hundreds of spectators, Grindsted left a remarkable mark on the season of 2025.

The third edition of the 2025 Challenger Teqball League unfolded in Grindsted, Denmark, welcoming a balanced blend of seasoned names and emerging prospects across three days of spirited competition. A total of 25 players took part, each seeking to leave a lasting impression on this latest chapter of the CTL series.

In the absence of FITEQ World Ranking leader Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU) in the men’s singles category, his GOBEK teammate Marek Pokwap (POL) took centre stage. Pokwap, who had already claimed a men’s singles CTL title in Wavre, Belgium, carried his form into Grindsted, cruising through Group B with a flawless record and an imposing +59 point difference. Group A was similarly dominated by the four-time world champion Adam Blazsovics (HUN), who matched Pokwap’s point tally of 96:37 without conceding a set. Sixteen-year-old Stefan Orlowski (POL) impressed with a string of mature performances, finishing second in Group A. His run was halted in the semi-finals by Pokwap, who later overcame Blazsovics in straight sets to secure a back-to-back CTL crown. The bronze medal match saw local favourite Mathias Land Jeppesen edge Orlowski in a tense three-set contest.

The women’s singles category further underlined GOBEK’s dominance, as Kinga Barabasi (ROU) delivered a composed and commanding performance throughout. Facing France’s Amelie Julian on two occasions - once in the group stage and again in the final - Barabasi emerged victorious both times, sealing the title with a 2:0 win (12:10, 12:6) in the final while the '2021 Queen of Teqball', Anna Izsak won the bronze game against the local Mira Dahlmann.

Men’s doubles offered a dynamic mix of veteran experience and youthful ambition. Denmark’s Frederik Guldborg-Mondrup and Saxe Paarup-Clausen led the charge from Group B, dropping just one set en route to the top spot, including a notable win over Brian Mengel Thomsen (DEN) and Blazsovics. In Group A, Pokwap and Gyorgydeak formed a fearsome partnership, topping their group with a +46 point difference. The final saw the GOBEK pair assert their authority, defeating the Danish duo in straight sets (12:1, 12:6). Thomsen and Blazsovics secured bronze with a victory over Orlowski and Szabolcs Ilyes (ROU).

Gyorgydeak and Barabasi extended their unbeaten CTL record as a pairing in mixed doubles. The Romanian duo dominated Group A with a +35 point differential and did not drop a set throughout the tournament. Their final against Julian and Guldborg-Mondrup ended in emphatic fashion, 12:4, 12:2. The duo of Zsofia Dezsenyei (HUN)/Saxe Paarup-Clausen beat the Dahlmanns, Noah and Mira in two sets and took the third place.

Beyond the medals, the Grindsted event fulfilled its wider ambition - bringing Teqball closer to local fans, engaging young players, and growing the sport’s presence. The next stop on the Challenger Teqball League circuit will be held in Ibiza, after the Teqball World Series event in Dezhou, China from 24–26 May.
