CTL - Historical heights for Kuwait in Ibiza

Acs/Izsak brought the biggest surprise of the season after winning the women''s doubles.

The fourth edition of the 2025 Challenger Teqball League unfolded in Ibiza, Spain, where a total of 56 athletes from a record-breaking 22 countries. Never have so many nations been represented in the history of the CTL.

In the absence of the category's world title holder, Apor Gyorgydeak, the pressure was huge on the multiple Teqball World Series winner, Marek Pokwap (POL). The Polish youngster stood out from the field even before the competition started and showed his greatness once again. In Ibiza, he took his third CTL trophy in men's singles. In the final, the 'Danish Dynamite', Saxe Paarup-Clausen was not able to stop Pokwap's powerful serves and lost in two straight sets. The 16-year-old prodigy tied his best-ever in the Challenger Teqball League after the silver medal in men's doubles at home turf in May. World championships fifth, Dmytro Shevhcuk finished third after beating Baptiste Berna (POR) in three close sets.

The odds were low for the 'W' of Kinga Barabasi (ROU)/Amelie Julian (FRA) in women's doubles. After the group stage when they victoried over one of the biggest rivals in Ibiza, Krisztina Acs/Anna Izsak (HUN), everything seemed perfect. Confident triumph in the semifinal against Maria Clemente (POR)/Adriana Kecerova (SVK) and they faced the Hungarians in the final once again who said farewell to Silvia Ferrer Garcia (ESP) and Maria Chedid (LBN) on the other branch. From the very beginning in the Vara de Rey - the main square of the city where the finals were held - Acs played perfectly: defended every smash, served the ball with a high percentage and assisted the 2021 'Queen of Teqball' well and Izsak did what she does the best: smashing. In two close sets, the debuting duo, Acs/Izsak won the only gold medals for Hungary and caused a major surprise. Spain as the hosting country also finished with a medal after Ferrer Garcia/Chedid did not let their opponents take the lowest step on the podium.

History repeated itself, once again Gyorgydeak (ROU) beat Nikola Mitro (SRB) in the finals. However, in mixed doubles, it was not only the two of them at the table in the gold match. Gyorgydeak with his usual partner, Barabasi and Mitro for the first time, with Acs. The game was played in Gyorgydeak's style with quick rallies, punctual serves and leaving no room for error. Two sets, 2:0, no questions asked. Patryk Kaminsky and Ewa Kaminska represented Poland among the eleven countries that finished on the medal table after winning the bronze match against Izsak/Arpad Sipos (HUN).

The men's doubles were all about Gyorgydeak/Pokwap who did not let any opponents score more than 8 points in any set. Having said that, it is not a surprise that they took the gold and stayed unbeaten since the superteam was formed. Yet, with a historical performance by gaining the first medals at international events, the Kuwaiti team left Ibiza as the happiest squad. Zaid Eidan and Abdulwahab Alqattan after finishing their quartet on the top, faced Noah Dahlmann/Paarup Clausen in the quarterfinals and won in two sets. In the SF, Martin Vasques/Goncalo Reis waited for them and in one of the closest matches in the competition, in three sets, the Kuwaitis went further. Eidan was a three-setter specialist in Ibiza and played four of them (won half of it). For the third place, Lionel Beyer (FRA)/Berna beat the Portuguese prodigies.
