Canada hosts its first intl. Teqball tournament
The upcoming weekend will see plenty of Teqball action as Guelph, Canada (next to Toronto), as well as Monaco, organises its first international event with 33 athletes representing 12 countries from 4 continents. The Canadian Teqball Tournament offers titles in four categories: women’s & men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Kindall Kaufmann (USA) got her first medals in this sport at the Teqball World Series Tulsa in 2024. Her inaugural competition in women’s singles was the World Teqball Championships 2024, where she finished 17th. In Canada, she is the highest-seeded. Only a few spots behind, Kari Kaur Brech comes representing the organising country. Stephanie Brito is mostly known for doubles; however, this time she may cause turbulence to the opponents with her stable defence. The rest of the field is full of Brazilian newcomers who are relatively unknown.
In men’s singles, twenty athletes face each other and the highest ranked of them is Robert Kertesz (CAN), who owns the 58th place in this category at FITEQ World Ranking. His compatriots, the 2nd seed and also one of his main challengers, along with Aaron Servin (MEX), who started his Teqball career in 2023 in Los Angeles. Among the debutants, Owen Kelly stands out, who is 14 years old and the youngest in the entire competition.
Denis Correia is one of the most dedicated American Teqball athletes with multiple domestic cup trophies, and won once the USA Teqball Tour – Los Angeles back in January of 2023, along with multiple medals from other TTs. He teamed with Leonardo Santana (BRA), who is known for his great defence and powerful head game. Although they are the team to beat, Kertesz/Zsibok know each other well, and this chemistry may cause surprises. Besides the athletes who play first at the international level, the Mexican duo, Afdel Yair Parra Sanchez/Servin, have the highest chance to reach the podium.
Kaufmann/Santana seems to be destined to play in the final in mixed doubles as by far the highest-rated twosome. Correia/Brito are the main challengers, but the rest of the field has not shown its talent at this level yet.
The finals will start from 1 PM (local time) and will be streamed live on Teq TV.
