The President of Sri Lanka’s National Teqball Federation (Teq Sri Lanka), Mr Gamini Jayasinghe, will lead the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka delegation at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as Chef de Mission.

President Jayasinghe has been at the heart of Sri Lankan sports development for several decades, including as the NOC’s Treasurer for over 10 years. In recent years he has played a leading role in the growth of teqball, collaborating with FITEQ to make the world’s fastest growing sport widely available to aspiring young athletes across the country.

As Chef de Mission at Tokyo 2020, President Jayasinghe will be responsible for supporting and mentoring the country’s athletes and team officials throughout the Games. He brings considerable experience to the role, having held multiple roles in addition to being NOC Treasurer, including being Treasurer of the Handball Federation of Sri Lanka, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation, Vice-President of the Government Services Hockey Association, and a member of the Development and Coaching Committee member of the Asian Hockey Federation.

President Jayasinghe also brings significant experience as a successful athlete. He was selected for the Sri Lanka Hockey Team on a number of occasions and toured countries such as India, Pakistan, and Singapore.

Speaking ahead of the Games, President Jayasinghe said, “Unlike other Games, the COVID-19 challenge has put an added responsibility upon the Sri Lankan contingent. However, Japan being one of the most technologically and medically advanced countries, and with most of its day-to-day life is going on unabated, we can take some courage from the situation. As for the athletes who are competing at the Games, this will be a beacon of hope. I reckon with the situation at hand our Sri Lankans should perform to their true potential.

The global teqball community extends its best wishes to President Jayasinghe and the whole Sri Lankan delegation.
