Teqball World Championships 2022 Day 2 Summary

Day 2 of The Teqball World Championships 2022 commenced on Thursday at the 4,000 capacity KIA Metropol Arena.

There was a surprise result in the Men’s Singles when world number 8, Bogdan Marojevic, who had a bye in the group stage the day before, was knocked out in the round of 16 by world number 81, Brian Mengel Thomson, 2-1 (10-12, 12-8, 12-9). Thomson (Denmark) then found himself up against Luka Pilic (USA) in the Quarterfinals, but was defeated 2-0 (12-9, 12-7) as the American advanced to the Semi-final to face world number one Apor Gyorgydeak. Gyorgydeak emerged victorious with a dominant 2-0 (12-5, 12-4) win.

The other Semi-final was between Adam Blazsovics and Adrian Duszak, with world number four Duszak winning 2-1 (8-12, 12-4, 12-6), setting up a clash of the titans against Gyorgydeak in the final on Sunday afternoon. In the bronze match, Blazsovics won 2-0 (12-11, 12-6)

In the Women’s singles, Brazil’s Rafaella Fontes took home bronze after blazing through to the Semi-finals where she was beaten 2-0 (12-8, 12-8) by the formidable American Carolyn Greco, who hasn’t dropped a set all tournament. Greco will be joined in Sunday’s final at 14.00 by world number one and reigning champion Anna Izsak, who beat Amelie Julian 2-1 (12-3, 6-12, 12-8) in the Semi-final.

The women’s doubles event saw the world number one partnership of Margaret Osmundson and Carolyn Greco reach the final for the second consecutive year, as the Americans won 2-0 (12-11, 12-10) against the Romanian pairing of Katalin Dako and Kinga Barabasi. Lea Vasas and Zsanett Janicsek will meet Greco and Osmundson in the final after beating last year's champions, Rafaella Fontes and Natalia Guitler, 2-0 (12-8, 12-9). Fontes and Guitler won the bronze match to maintain a place on the podium.

The surprise of the day was for Luka Pilic (USA) who to make it to the top four players in the world is his best achievement so far in his career.
