Rwanda and FITEQ strengthen partnership to boost Teqball development and host major events
In a landmark meeting in Budapest, senior Rwandan government officials and leaders of FITEQ laid the groundwork for a bold new chapter in African sport by bringing Teqball to schools across Rwanda and positioning the country to host the first-ever African and World Teqball Championships on the continent.
A high-level meeting between the Rwandan government delegation and top officials from FITEQ marked a significant milestone in the sport’s growth across Africa. The Rwandan delegation, led by H.E. Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister of Sport, and H.E. Margueritte Françoise Nyagahura, Ambassador of Rwanda to Hungary, held discussions with Mr. Gabor Borsanyi, President of FITEQ, and Mr. Laszlo Vajda, Secretary General of FITEQ to explore key initiatives aimed at integrating Teqball into Rwanda’s sports ecosystem.
At the heart of the meeting was the ambitious plan to introduce Teqball to Isonga, a school in Rwanda with a special emphasis on sports excellence. Currently, around 10 sports form the backbone of Rwanda’s school sports curriculum across 17 institutions. With a vision to expand to 30 schools in the coming years, the delegation emphasized the importance of incorporating innovative sports like Teqball to nurture young talent and foster grassroots development.
Teqball, has rapidly gained popularity worldwide due to its accessibility, fun factor, and alignment with skill-based athletic development. By integrating it into school programs, Rwanda aims to create a robust pipeline of future athletes, referees, and coaches.
The second major focus of the discussions was Rwanda’s interest in hosting the first-ever African Teqball Championships, a continental competition that would mark a historic first for the sport on the continent. Building on this, the parties also discussed Rwanda’s potential to host a World Teqball Championships, another unprecedented move for Africa.
These aspirations reflect Rwanda’s growing profile as a premier host of international sporting events and align with its national strategy to become a regional sports hub and main destination for everyone worldwide.
Established in 2021, the Rwanda Teqball Federation has swiftly become one of Africa’s most dynamic national federations. Since its inception, the federation has organized numerous training courses for players, coaches, and referees, and has actively participated in international events. With the strong support of the Ministry of Sport, the federation is poised for further growth, aiming to elevate its programs and expand its reach across the country.
The Rwandan government reaffirmed its commitment to working hand-in-hand with FITEQ to advance Teqball’s development at all levels, from grassroots to elite competition.
