Who will stop GOBEK on their home court?
48 athletes from 9 countries in four categories will face each other in the home of GOBEK, in Odorheiu Secuiesc. The GOBEK Teqball Tournament – Szekelyudvarhely GOBEK Cup as FITEQ’s newest competition kicks off on June 20 and the finals will be held on the 22nd
Last year, with the Challenger Teqball League – Székelyudvarhely stop, the GOBEK Teqball Team showed that they are only top in Teqball as their athletes - Apor Gyorgydeak, Kinga Barabasi, Marek Pokwap – are among the best but in organising the event, they are also one to follow.
With men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles, four titles can be taken expectedly in front of thousands of local fans who will support their own athletes with all their energy.
In men’s singles, two-time world champion, title holder and FITEQ World Ranking leader, Apor Gyorgydeak has the pressure to continue his unbeaten streak. While the supporters will do everything to help him, last year it almost backfired in the semifinals. This time, Marek Pokwap (POL) will not compete in MS however the runner-up in men’s doubles in Teqball World Series – Dezhou, Soma Cseri (HUN) with his powerful bombs can be one of the challengers. The Hungarians Boldizsar Levik and Benjamin Patrik Toth have low odds to reach the knockout stage while the Polish prodigy, Stefan Orlowski and Mathias Landen Jeppesen from Denmark can also cause unpleasant moments.
Another home athlete, three-time world bronze medallist and European champion, Kinga Barabasi is the favourite in women’s singles and one of the biggest opponents might be Anna Izsak (HUN) the 2021 ’Queen of Teqball’ as well as the Frenchwoman, Amelie Julian who despite her age is already a world and European medallist. The fourth athlete from the FITEQ World Ranking WS category is Viorica Tonu who is able to beat anybody on one of those days.
In men’s doubles, Gyorgydeak and Pokwap are the duo to beat. Since they teamed up, nobody beat them, 30 wins, 5 titles. With high expectations, it will be interesting to see the debuting double of the three-time world champion Nikola Mitro (SRB) and Cseri together. The usual pair from the next generation, Levik/Toth are the third on the seeding list while Orlowski and his compatriot, Bartlomiej Franczuk will be tough to crack. Arnold Szilagyi/Hunor Kristaly (ROU) know each other very well and the home court could help them surprise the opponents. The inaugural European Youth Teqball Championships shows its effect on this event too as multiple under-19 athletes compete in singles and doubles.
The betting offices would pay a huge pile of cash if, in the final of mixed doubles, not two of these three twosomes faced each other Barabasi/Pokwap, Julian/Mitro and Franczuk/Tonu. The rest of the field is far behind them thus everything is set for the local fans to enjoy a real GOBEK-extravaganza and multiple titles.
The first two days of the competition will be organised in the Rakoczi Center where last season’s Challenger Teqball League – Szekelyudvarhely GOBEK Cup was held while the finals will move to Sala Sporturilor Odorheiu Secuiesc, the city’s sports centre and will be streamed on TEQ TV.
