TT – Budapest seen world-class Teqball on the final day

Pokwap was untouchable at Teqball Tour Budapest and triumphed in two categories beating other favourites.

The third day of Teqball Tour Budapest with 15.000 USD prize money brought sensational Teqball for the fans. First, multiple tight matches, then a few upsets, showed that this Saturday in the Hungarian capital will be different.

There are only a few things certain in the world, and one of them is that the title-holder Thai duo, Jutatip Kuntatong/Suphawadi Wongkhamchan, are the ones to beat in women’s doubles. It was similar in the „home of Teqball”. Firstly, they beat Amelie Julian/Silvia Ferrer Garcia in two, then came the rematch of the 2023 final of the world champs against Petra Pechy/Nora Vicsek (HUN). The FITEQ World Ranking leaders once again showed the world why they are the best ones and reached the final. On the other branch, Krisztina Acs/Kinga Barabasi confidently beat Anna Izsak/Zsofia Dezsenyi (HUN), next was the German duo of Daytona Hansen/Nelly Wilke, who, by reaching the semis, already made history. This level was too much for them; thus, they won their first bronze medals for Germany in any major Teqball event. In the final, the Thais controlled both sets and never let the opponents get dangerously close.

„We train hard to be better and keep winning. It is a great feeling to lift the trophy at the end of an exhausting event, especially in beautiful Budapest,” highlighted Kuntatong.

In men’s doubles, the quarterfinals also brought several three-setters. As expected, the team that was previously considered the strongest in both branches reached the final. Four-time world champion Adam Blazsovics (HUN) and his compatriot, the 2023 world champion Balazs Katz, marched, if not easily, but always with sure feet, to the last match. The Romanian Apor Gyorgydeak and the Polish Marek Pokwap, who have suffered only one defeat this year in addition to 58 wins, reached the final somewhat more confidently. While the Hungarians said goodbye to the two very young talents, Stefan Orlowski (POL)and Milan Csabi (HUN), in the semifinals, Gyorgydeak and Pokwap defeated another Polish-Hungarian duo, Gergo Dombai and Bartlomiej Franczuk. Thus, the four bronze medals were shared by two Hungarians and two Poles. The final had a special prestige, as the only defeat of the pair strengthening the GOBEK Teqball Club this year came against the Hungarians, but the international double in the blue jersey did not give the home team a chance, who were just running after the result.

"Marek and I make a great pair, we really feel each other at the table, and I am really happy that so many people came to visit and cheer for us", - emphasised the world number one from Romania, Gyorgydeak, with the gold medal around his neck.

In mixed doubles, the draw brought two semi-finals that could have been world championship finals after the three final-setters in the quarter-finals. In both cases, it was an Asian-European duel. First, Marek Pokwap/Nora Vicsek won in three sets against Jutatip Kuntatong/Jirati Chanlian, then the Poles were followed by their clubmates in the final, as Barabasi/Gyorgydeak avenged their defeat at the last world championships against the current title holders, Phakpong Dejaroen and Suphawadi Wongkhamchan, who, together with their compatriots, can return home to Thailand with a bronze medal. In the gold match, the pairs formed from clubmates went head-to-head, and after the closest possible final result in both sets, Pokwap/Vicsek rejoiced.

The next period is about preparing for the World Championship, we want to perform even better than the last silver.” – Vicsek explained after the last match of the Teqball Tour.

They eventually won a total of one gold, four silver and four bronze medals in three categories at the Budapest stop of the Teqball Tour.
