ATL - Mitro and Pokwap led the show in Ohrid
2025 Adriatic Teqball League officially began in Ohrid, North Macedonia with two categories, men's singles & doubles for 3000€ prize money and the start was not short of excitement, local victories and prime matchups.
On June 14th, Ohrid, North Macedonia hosted the first stop of the 2025 Adriatic Teqball League. The ATL became the region’s main competition in the last years, with 26 athletes representing 12 countries the rule changes already showed its advantages.
As expected, in men's singles, two athletes stood out from the field —three-time world champion Nikola Mitro (SRB) also finished as runner-up in the World Teqball Championships 2024 and the multiple Teqball World Series title winner, Marek Pokwap (POL). Bogdan Marojevic, with whom Mitro won the three world titles in men's doubles was also very confident in the group stage but luck was not with him as he met the Polish prodigy in the quarterfinals and lost in two sets, finished fifth. Pokwap in the semifinals faced Dimitar Pejchinovski as the best-performing North Macedonian athlete in Ohrid. The world championship silver medallist Polish showed no mercy and easily reached the finals while the FITEQ World Ranking 56th finished with the bronze medal tiying his best-ever performance at any international Teqball event. On the other branch, Mitro said farewell to two world championships decorated veterans, Szaboly Ilyes (ROU) in the QF and Arpad Sipos (HUN) in the semis. The final was a bit more one-sided than everyone thought after Pokwap did not let Mitro gear up and find the rhythm. With this triumph, the European championship bronze medallist took his first gold in the Adriatic Teqball League.
“I have waited very much for my first participation in the Adriatic Techball League because I saw videos, and photos from last year and I'm glad that now I participated and as well win my first title. I am proud of my performances in singles. In doubles, I think we were not good enough today, but I hope I will come back to Bar, to the next stop of the Adriatic Teqball League and hopefully, I will return home with two trophies." added Pokwap with his first ATL title in the bag.
After a successful group stage campaign in men's doubles, the highest-seeded local duo, Pejchinovski along with Kosta Trifunoski met the Montenegrin champions, Andrija Jovanovic/Marko Zarkovic and lost in two sets. With that, they finished fifth at Adriatic Teqball League - Ohrid as the best Nort Macedonian double. The Jovanovic/Zarkovic pair was stopped in the semifinals by Marojevic/Mitro and finished third. The 17-year-old Marton Pinter (HUN) and his partner, Sipos reached also the lowest position on the podium after they were stopped by Ilyes/Pokwap in two. In the final, the tables were turned and the Serbs controlled the whole game with sharp serves, multiple forced errors and powerful attacks.
"This was a solid European-level tournament, like the Challengers Teqball League stops I have played in the past. I think we justified our position as favourites in men's doubles and deserved the win. Unfortunately, we will not participate in Bar but we are preparing for Sarajevo and show once again our best performance." said Mitro after the triumph in men's doubles along with Marojevic.
The next Adriatic Teqball League stop will hosted in Bar, Montenegro on July 19 once again with two categories (men's singles & doubles) for 3000€ prize money. The event will be very unique as the finals will be held in the historical harbour of the city.
